Merseyrail operates the electrified metro-style rail network across Merseyside, serving Liverpool and surrounding areas. Owned by Merseytravel, it's one of the most distinctive rail operations in the UK — and train driver selection follows the same rigorous OPC psychometric battery as most other GB mainline operators.
Train Driver Tests is an independent practice platform. Our exercises are practice versions modelled on the OPC assessment formats — they are not the official tests, and we are not affiliated with Merseyrail or any train operating company.

The Merseyrail OPC Assessment
Merseyrail's high-frequency, high-stop network means drivers work intense shifts in an urban environment. Attention must be consistently sharp: platforms are busy, service headways are tight, and the consequences of lapses are severe. The Vigilance Test directly measures the sustained attention this demands.
Merseyrail uses Class 507 and 508 electric multiple units — a fleet now being replaced by brand-new Class 777 trains. Trainee drivers who join now will drive some of the newest trains in the UK. All must first clear the OPC assessment alongside the rest of the selection process.
Assessment centres for Merseyrail are at their Liverpool depot. As a highly regarded employer in the region, Merseyrail attracts strong competition for each driver vacancy — arriving at your assessment centre prepared for the psychometric tests is essential.

Four practice tests included
Vigilance Test
A grey square sits in the centre of the screen. Watch it for 30 minutes and press Space the moment it turns black. Tests sustained attention — a core skill for train drivers.

Hazard Perception Flash Test
A practice version of the hazard-perception flash test (similar to the ATAVT). A traffic scene flashes for 1 second. Identify which elements you saw — lights, vehicles, pedestrians, signs, bicycles, motorcycles. Tests perceptual speed and scene awareness.

Rules & Procedures Test
A practice version of the rules & procedures memory test (similar to the TRP1). Read a set of train operating rules for 5 minutes, then answer 18 questions from memory in 15 minutes. Tests comprehension and rule retention under time pressure.

Common questions
Does Merseyrail recruit trainee train drivers?
Yes. Merseyrail regularly advertises for trainee train drivers, particularly as its new Class 777 fleet expands. No prior rail driving experience is required. Vacancies are listed on the Merseyrail careers page and Merseytravel jobs portal.
Which tests are included in the OPC battery?
The OPC (Occupational Personality and Cognitive) battery includes the Vigilance Test (WAFV), ATAVT, Group Bourdon, and several other assessments. The exact combination varies slightly by operator but all are governed by RSSB standard RIS-3751-TOM.
Is this the same as the official test?
No. These are independent practice tests modelled on the format and parameters of the official OPC assessment — 30 minutes for the vigilance test, brief flashes for the hazard-perception test. No practice site can replicate the exact proprietary software, but the format is calibrated to be similar.
