Applying to drive for ScotRail?

ScotRail operates passenger rail services across Scotland, from the Central Belt to the Highlands and Islands. Now publicly owned by the Scottish Government, ScotRail recruits train drivers across a range of depots throughout Scotland, all of whom must pass the OPC psychometric test battery.

Scotland

The ScotRail OPC Assessment

Scotland's rail network includes everything from busy commuter routes around Glasgow and Edinburgh to scenic single-track lines in the Highlands. The cognitive demands of driving vary considerably — but the core need for sustained vigilance and rapid hazard perception applies across all routes.

The Vigilance Test (WAFV) challenges you to maintain focus for 30 minutes on a near-featureless screen. This is one of the most direct measures of the attention span required in the cab. Many candidates underestimate its difficulty until they try it — especially on quieter Highland routes where monotony is a genuine risk.

ScotRail assessment centres are located at key depots including Glasgow Corkerhill, Edinburgh Haymarket, and others. The OPC battery is a standardised component — the same tests, same timing, same scoring methodology as used across all UK TOCs.

What you'll practice

Two practice tests included

👁

Vigilance Test

A grey square sits in the centre of the screen. Watch it for 30 minutes and press Space the moment it turns black. Tests sustained attention — a core skill for train drivers.

  • 30-minute full-length simulation
  • Random stimulus intervals
  • Scored on hits, misses & reaction time
🚦

ATAVT

A traffic scene flashes for 1 second. Identify which elements you saw — lights, vehicles, pedestrians, signs, bicycles, motorcycles. Tests perceptual speed and scene awareness.

  • 20 scenes per session
  • Brief flash per scene
  • Per-element identification scoring

FAQ

Common questions

Are ScotRail train driver tests different from other UK operators?

No — ScotRail uses the same OPC psychometric battery (RIS-3751-TOM) as all other UK train operating companies. The Vigilance Test and ATAVT are identical in format.

Which tests are included in the OPC battery?

The OPC (Occupational Personality and Cognitive) battery includes the Vigilance Test (WAFV), ATAVT, Group Bourdon, and several other assessments. The exact combination varies slightly by operator but all are governed by RSSB standard RIS-3751-TOM.

Is this the same as the real test?

Our tests match the format and parameters of the real OPC assessment — 30 minutes for the Vigilance test, brief flashes for the ATAVT. No practice site can replicate the exact proprietary software, but the format is calibrated to match.
